Maths Lead: Mr M Jones
We aim to provide every child with a high-quality mathematics education that is engaging, inclusive and ambitious, enabling pupils to develop confidence, resilience and a lifelong appreciation of mathematics.
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice, developing conceptual understanding alongside rapid and accurate recall
- Reason mathematically by explaining, justifying and proving their thinking using precise mathematical vocabulary
- Solve a range of routine and non-routine problems by applying their mathematical understanding with increasing confidence and sophistication
- Develop resilience and perseverance when approaching challenging problems
- Apply mathematical knowledge across the wider curriculum and in real-life contexts
- Work both independently and collaboratively, articulating their ideas through purposeful mathematical discussion
At Noak Bridge Primary School, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme to deliver a coherent, progressive and mastery-based curriculum. The White Rose small steps progression allows concepts to be taught in carefully sequenced stages, ensuring children develop a deep and secure understanding over time.
- Daily Maths lessons focusing on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving
- Daily arithmetic practice in KS2 and later in Year 2 to strengthen number fluency and mental calculation strategies
- Mathematical topics taught in blocks to support mastery and long-term retention
- Frequent retrieval and revisiting of prior learning to embed knowledge into long-term memory
- High-quality resources including White Rose Premium Resources
- Adapted teaching through scaffolding, targeted support and appropriate challenge to ensure all learners can succeed and make progress
- Opportunities for deeper thinking through investigations and reasoning tasks.
In Key Stage 1, children are taught using the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach to build secure mathematical understanding. Pupils first explore concepts using practical equipment and hands-on resources, before moving on to visual representations and finally abstract methods using numbers and symbols. A strong emphasis is placed on counting, number recognition, place value and calculation strategies, with key number facts revisited regularly to build fluency and confidence.
